• 449 pages of non-stop reading excitement in the just released “Celtic Empire”, a Dirk Pitt novel by Clive Cussler and his son Dirk Cussler. When one reads a Dirk Pitt novel, you are initially brought back to an early period of history, and then to the present with a wealth of scientific information, danger and excitement.
  
  In various parts of the world there are a number of violent events in areas where young boys are dying from an unknown reason or source. While doing work for NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) in Copapayo, El Salvador, the Cerron Grande Dam suddenly explodes and NUMA Director Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino race to save some people on boats, before they get swept over the damaged dam. And yes, young boys in the area have been dying.
  
  Around the same time, Dirk’s son and daughter, Dirk Pitt Jr. and Summer, both Special Projects Directors of NUMA, are working on a dig in Egypt when violence occurs. Soon the NUMA team is focused on areas of violence and young boy’s deaths from Karachi, to Mumbai, to Detroit and finally the clues take them to Scotland and Ireland where the mystery is finally solved.
  
  As in previous Dirk Pitt novels, the three Pitt’s are in constant danger and in situations where there does not seem to be away out. Still, they always find a way, as they did in the final chapter on Skellig Michael Island off the coast of Ireland. And, like usual they seem to destroy a lot of cars, scooters, boats and more, before solving the mystery. Many thanks Clive & Dirk, you have once again hit the ball out of the ballpark!
• …you'll find a lot of the same details common to all of Cussler's books, I think Clive and Dirk (.whoever actually does the writing these days) make one of the best Cussler teams writing the various series. Something happens somewhere, sometime in the past…and then the story moves into the (near, in this case May 2020 and ends two years later) present times.
  Some evildoer connects with the past story element and it takes the Pitts and their friends to save the day. You get 2 usually connecting storylines, Dirk Sr. and Dirk Jr. and his sister, lots of sometimes hardly plausible action before they unite to save the day. Younger or Senior usually manage to meet Clive Cussler in a cameo appearance …he's in this book too. The car on the back covers of these books is in the story too, as almost always.
  It's not Tom Clancy at his best (he's been dead for 6 years now and still writing books) but Clive and Dirk make one of the better writing teams (maybe the best of the "Cussler" teams.
  Well worth owning and the writing is better than most of what you read.
• Of all the Clive Cussler stories and documentaries I've read (all of them since the early 1980s, and catching up on the early ones) this is another. Except, in recent years Dirk Pitt kinda lost his mojo after taking over NUMA.
  
  This story was more like the old Dirk and Al Giordino of the first generation writing that was such great fun to read. In fact, you'll even find some embedded adopted devices out of some of those stories...and that's okay. They are edge-of-seat reading even though you know our heroes will save the world as well as themselves.
  
  The biggest challenge when reading Cussler stories is getting to a breathing point after a crisis where you can put the book down and go to bed, fully knowing as soon as you go back to reading you're going to be in another 50 pages of nail-bitiing drama. What's not to love?
• I always love reading the next Clive Cussler book. They always have a very interesting plot, often connected with some interesting trivia from history. In this case, Egyptian history. And Irish history. That always adds an interesting twist to the story. And then there are the hair-raising situations they get into, and then get out of without (usually) having to shoot anyone... ) Great fun reading!
• I have read every Dirk Pitt book. With the world going crazy about political correctness, it's good to get lost in a book about a good man. Not perfect but someone trying to do the right thing for the right reasons. Waiting for the next Story.

• Bought Celtic Empire with Audible. I'm now able to listen to my book while I'm fixing meals. Like all of Clive Cussler books, I find it hard to put the book down or stop listening. The book keeps you spell bound wanting to know what's coming next. This was more than I usually pay for a book but frankly its been worth it.
• Another great adventure from the Cusslers. Who would expect an Egyptian Queen in Ireland?
  
  This was another page turner that took us through Egypt, Scotland and Ireland with good characters and plenty of action. You just know that just when you think things are going well, the bad guys will show up and ruin the day. But it keeps the suspense going.
  
  A good old fashioned story with good guys, bad guys and a world that needs saving.

• This book has beautiful illustrations of some of our most well-known friends in heaven. The author added a lovely saint quote for each. The quotes mean much to myself, but I felt the wording was at a level where children (particularly pre-school and first grade), do not grasp the vocabulary used. I had to paraphrase many of the quotes to my first grader (and saints are not a new concept to her). I had purchased the book to add to our collection for the Feast of All Saints.
• This is a Board Book which somehow I missed so I can't return it. So, it is designed for children who aren't old enough to read yet this is not a book a toddlwr can read. My 7 year old grandson is going to think it is a baby book. There isnt enough material to interest or be of any use to him. I honestly don't know who this book is designed for?? A 4 year who can't read or understand the concepts yet?? Honestly, I am disappointed beyond words. I bought and now and stuck with two of these books Cloud of Witnesses and Scripture. Both of which I had truly hoped would give my 7 year old grandson something Catholic to read and understand in his anti-Catholic world. These are useless. The reviews were so misleading.
• I just got this for my 2.75-year-old. He loved it. It's simple and sweet, and I loved the saints' quotes and the artist's use of color. It's a perfect "first book of saints."
• I love this book! The saints are some that my family already has a connection to, so we had such fun identifying them as we read through. The illustrations are gorgeous--simple, but thoughtful--and the quotes are helpful for parent and child alike to reflect on. I appreciate the quotes not being in toned-down child's language, because it opens the way for conversation. Highly recommend.
• I ordered this for a baby, and, while I like the book, the baby does not. The pages on the inside are a lot of text (specifically quotes from the Saints); text isn’t usually a bad thing, but it’s not exactly engaging for very small children. I’ve been using it as a teaching tool for my older kids, and they seem to get more use out of it, so although it’s not being read as intended, it’s still a useful book.
• I was looking forward to an accessible way to acquaint my 3 and 5 year old with the saints, this is not it. The idea is nice and the images are sweet but the content is nothing more than the saints name and a quote. Nothing about who the person is, what they did, why their a saint. Nothing in language oriented toward children. I'm bummed that life distracted me and I missed the opportunity to return this.
• Beautiful sort of minimal illustrations, excellent quotes. Very different from a typical cheesy/educational saint book. Got this as a gift for a one year old and wanted to keep it myself! It’s his favorite mass book and his parents love it.
• I love this board book. It fits well in my purse to come with us to mass, often with one of the Shining Light Dolls that I match up with these saints. Some books in this drama have images that are so cartoonish they are creepy, but these illustrations are lovely and attractive to children.

• This might be the funniest book I've ever read; Paulson takes us through his education as a clueless Iditarod racer, describing the mishaps he experiences throughout his training, and during the race. His dry wit as he described mishap after mishap caused me to shake with laughter as I tried to contain myself on the New York City subway; I had to put the book down several times so that I could "regroup" before the next bout of laughter. His saintly wife acts as his "straight man" as she endures his debacles at the hands of his dogs and whatever nature could throw at him.
  
  What also comes across though is the bond he forges with his dogs, especially Cookie, who seems to have a deep understand of Paulson, as well as what is expected of her as he trains; he describes her—and the bond he has with her—with great tenderness and devotion as they come to rely on each other during the course of the book.
  
  Whether you love books about animals, books that make you laugh, books about the Iditarod... I would highly recommend this book. I've read a lot of books, and this is one of the best I've ever read.
• This is one of the better books I've ever read! The premise is Paulsen preparing for then running the Iditarod, a 1000+ mile dog-sled race across Alaska. His misadventures are hilarious - getting dragged for miles by out-of-control dogs, getting blasted by skunks in the middle of the night, getting his clothing and more shredded by his cantankerous sled-dog "Devil", but the hilarity supplements the larger tale of his growing love of his dogs, and ultimately nature.
  
  It's a pretty quick read with funny anecdotes of events during the Iditarod, but it gives normal people a feeling for just how dedicated and hardy (fool hardy?) mushers are. This is a great book for teens and up.

• Winterdance by Gary Paulsen, the best-selling, award-winning author of young reader books, is a fascinating biography of his first Iditarod. He describes the preparation, the fund raising, the dangers, building a relationship with the dogs, and every possible aspect of the experience. The book is educational, spell-binding, and even shocking. If you've ever wondered about this race and what kind of person is driven to participate in it, this book is for you.
• This book, a true story about an inexperienced newcomer running the Iditerod for the first time, will make you laugh, make you think, raise goosebumps on your arms, and give you a whole new perspective on dogs. And no, you do not have to be a dog lover to love this book. It has been around a while. Years ago, I recommended it to our book club, many of whom ended up buying more copies for Christmas gifts. My dad liked it so much, he read it to his grandchildren (removing the occasional cuss word). It's an amazing race that happens every year in Alaska that doesn't get much notice. When you read what these racers have to overcome to run this race, you understand that they're a breed apart. I love this book. I don't know anybody who I've recommended it to that didn't love it as well.
• Don't read this book in public -- because you'll be laughing too hard to be in company. Great fun, great grit. Paulsen is about as crazy as his dogs, but this is compulsively interesting. A book for older teens and adults (nothing nasty in it, but it's nothing to recommend to his younger readers -- let them discover it on their own some day).
• There is a natural rhythm in Gary Paulsen's writing.... he takes youi from high danger to laughter in no time, at the same time he is making fictional story telling out of real life experiences, and making fiction seem intensely real. I have recommended his writing to two other and they have enjoyed it completely and recommended to still others.
• This is one of my favorite books of all time. Suitable for adults, young adults and reluctant readers.
  It's a great story filled with beautiful descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness. Paulsen's sense of humor makes me smile and laugh out loud at many points throughout the book. I have read this book 5 or 6 times. It's like visiting an old friend every time I read it.
• This was one of my favorite books as a kid, so I thought I would reread it. It was just as gripping and compelling as it was when I was a kid. I read it in a few hours because I couldn't put It down.

• I purchased this book awhile ago, and am just now offering my response to it. I LOVE this book!! It is easy to read and to understand. It is written in the most beautiful language I have read in years. I look forward to finding myself in the same situation that St. John of the Cross found himself in some day, which was in the midst of a feeling of nothingness...absolutely black, still, quiet, stagnant, nothingness....until he gradually sensed The Beloved was there in the darkness with him. John and his soul were then completely satisfied in their search for the Beloved, and their feelings of emptiness were nourished forever. It is a beautifully written current translation of a very important early spiritual document. Rarely do writers put pen to paper and produce orchestral literary music of the first water that is written in English without notations for a musical score! But Mirabai Starr has composed her work of translating Dark Night of the Soul in such fashion that it fascinates the reader with its beauty, and it's easy to understand. Such an amazing contemporary new transcription of this ancient work depicting the workings of the human spirit in its utmost range of human emotions is a collector's treasure in any reader's well-used library. For today's readers who seek to know what, when, and why, and how, this book should answer all your questions of the spirit. I recommend it!
• If you are at the stage in life where you are ready to understand the contents in this book, you will it know it. You will feel a sense of comfort as you read, because you will feel as though the author completely understands you, it’s like the author knows you better than you know yourself. I broke down in tears multiple times while reading, out of pure relief - “ahhhh, someone finally gets it.” It made me feel less alone and it gave me a newfound sense of hope. I am reassured that I am exactly where I’m supposed to be. Highly recommend for any serious spiritual seeker who is curious about understanding themselves on a deeper level and understanding the nature of the divine. Profound wisdom.
• I was introduced to this book many years ago but did not become seriously interested in reading it until I heard some programs by Fr. Thomas Dubay. He introduces you to the more difficult aspects of the contents and tries to simplify, very well indeed, difficult parts with "pedestrian" words, as he puts it. You can download these programs, called "The Great Exchange" from the website EWTN.com and click on the audible library link. Then, I think, one can be better prepared to understand some of the more difficult aspects of this masterpiece as the soul journeys toward union with God. It is called "dark night", because the soul travels in darkness being deprived of images and concepts in the faculties as it is purified for union with God, its guide being faith alone......

• This is the most difficult book I have read. I gained much from reading it, but there's no doubt that I missed much too, both on its face and in its depth. That's not too surprising or disturbing, for as John of the Cross says of the soul that "can free itself from the house of its sensuality" "None can understand it, unless as it seems to me, it be the soul who has experienced it."
  
  St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a Spanish mystic, canonized in 1675 and named a doctor of the Catholic Church in 1926. A Carmelite priest, he embraced poverty and, working with Teresa of Avila, attempted to reform the order. His fellow Carmelites imprisoned, starved, and tortured him. While imprisoned he wrote a brief poem, Dark Night of the Soul. He then wrote two books, Ascent of Mount Carmel and Dark Night of the Soul, explaining and interpreting the poem. Or he wrote one book doing that the translator of this edition views Dark Night as a continuation of the Ascent rather than a separate treatise. Or perhaps he wrote no book it isn't clear to me that he intended the manuscript for publication; it may have been his personal reflections to aid himself. It was published posthumously, nearly twenty years after his death.
  
  In the Ascent, John wrote of the "active" night; the Dark Night addresses the "passive" night of purification of the sense and spirit to prepare the soul for union with God. By himself even with ordinary grace, man cannot be transformed totally in God. God must act on passive man.
  
  The poem is obscure metaphor. In Dark Night, John often uses more metaphor to explain the metaphors, sometimes obscurely. He is often repetitive. Words seem to change meanings. And the book is incomplete; St. John apparently abandoned it before explicating the entire poem. (This edition contains in translation the complete text of what St. John wrote it is the Dark Night itself that was unfinished.) I found many passages and metaphors brilliant, but was lost in others. St. John sometimes seems to struggle to explain or describe the inexplicable and indescribable, which may be the reason for the many repetitions and metaphors.
  
  The early passages on "imperfections" relating to the seven deadly sins are a brilliant demonstration that the person free of sin still needs purgation and growth. Also very helpful are the passages in which St. John delineates tests to show whether difficulties flow from the Night and thus God or instead are from the self or the devil or the world.
  
  The Dark Night is a difficult book. The reader will wrestle with it. Most will gain much from the book but also miss much that it tries to offer.
• It's been a life changer for me. So many things occur in my spirit that I do not understand and do not know how to vocalize. It took me years to get through the first chapters but once I did, I felt as though St. John of the Cross was there speaking with me personally, understanding me completely.
