SprawlBall A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA Kirk Goldsberry Books Reviews

  • In February of 2018, Reddit user u/BreezyBlue had just finished a 4-year prison sentence and incredulously asked, "Wow the Warriors are really good now. Is Stephen Curry really the best player in the NBA?" According to the NBA's previous year's MVP award, the answer was a unanimous **yes**. To answer our time-traveler's follow-up questions of *Why?* and *How?* I would direct him Kirk Goldsberry's Sprawlball.

Kirk Goldsberry was mostly known to me as the guy who made awesome shot charts, but he also spent time as the VP of Analytics for the San Antonio Spurs. Sprawlball tells a familiar tale the rules of a game are set, and "Jeopardy James" abuses the economics of the Daily Double and algorithmic traders gobble-up tiny arbitrage opportunities. The NBA has, likewise, been in the process of squeezing out every statistical advantage that the introduction of the three-point line and rules protecting shooters can offer. Goldsberry doesn't really need to spend much time making a case here, but rather spends time pulling back the curtains on what you already know to be true. As a huge NBA fan, this is one of the few NBA books that I really feel increased my knowledge not just about the league's history but basketball strategy.

Sprawlball is not a perfect book by any means. There is a lot of repetition of knowledge that could have been edited out. Some of the pivotal charts maddeningly span from dark purple (good) to white (average) to dark green (bad). And also, the chapter recounting the Warrior's 15-16 championship run was a bit meandering. But overall, holy crap I ate through this book and loved it. The next time one of your friends gets out of a long prison sentence and is confused about the state of the NBA, boy do I have a book for them.
  • This is a very interesting book. I have played professional basketball for 6 years all over the world after playing in the NCAA Tourney twice in college. I love data driven point so view and this book is no different. There are so very many pieces of data that Kirk has captured over the years to and put together in a very specific way, that its content is inarguably true. Everything in this game (and other sports too) can be tied back to a piece or a set of data. This is and has been a peculiar approach to sports, it has been proven that knowing the data behind what we see can assist in “making” new athletes. Several of the data points utilized in this book can and I am sure will be used by coaches, parents, mentors, and athletes themselves to further develop their game while they can learn and understand what areas to work on, and what are the areas of opportunities. For basketball lovers like myself, I would highly recommend this book, if anything it is a fact based entertaining book that teaches a lot about the game (focusing on the NBA) today. For coaches of high level athletes, AAU stars, or other folks with hopes to play the game professionally, I would consider that this read could be very beneficial as well. Also, Aaron Dana did a phenomenal job with illustrating this book, very accurate and good looking art. Please let me know if you found this helpful by clicking on the “Helpful” button below, or leave a comment below if you have questions or would like to see other pictures and I will do my best to answer it. Cheers. Cass
  • By way of background, I have watched the league change radically from the 80s. Capturing these changes through the lens of transformational players, Kirk Goldsberry details this evolution in a way that only he can.

His heatmaps and Aaron Dana's wonderful illustrations provide compelling visuals to a fascinating story the metamorphosis of the league. As Goldsberry points out, though, this story isn't necessarily a positive one. I for one have decried the state of the league since the Warriors' 73-win season. Everyone is trying to mimic Golden State and Houston but few teams possess the personnel. Beyond that, the new NBA is often painful to watch.

This is the best book that I've read on the NBA since The Punch One Night, Two Lives, and the Fight That Changed Basketball by John Feinstein.
  • Received this book today and read almost all of it while watching the playoffs. A great analysis of the rise of the three and the potential decline of LBJ type rim attacks. Very insightful and filled with stats. If you like ball and enjoy the analytics of the game this is the perfect book.
  • One of the major reasons the demise of Grantland is mourned by so many people are the wonderful analytics Mr. Goldsberry provided the site. He is still going strong on ESPN and this compendium expounds on his brilliant work for both sites. If you know his work, you are already a buyer. If you don't know his work... order this right away if you enjoy pro basketball. He is the heir to Dean Oliver's throne.

"This book was very well-written, and had some interesting philosophies on life and religion. Miller writes his own version of the ten commandments, and they are quite a unique perspective. This book is thought-provoking and would be a great implementation or guide on how to live life the right way. The commandments are more like ethical principles for life. It's a way of looking at "thyself" and self-discovery. The words paint a grand picture and whether or not the reader is religious, it gives a new thought for self-wisdom."

A Better Ten Commandments A guide to living life with and on purpose edition by James Miller Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

  • This is a really good book! I should probably state that I had a very religious upbringing and as a result hold many of the same "anti-religious" ideas so many of statements that some people could be offended by had no effect on me. What I love about the book is

    1) the author cites many different scientific, psychological, historical, etc. studies (experiment, fact, ect.)
    2) it is well reasoned and thought out
    3) the exception to the rule, cognitive dissonance, blind spot, etc. are concepts that are understood and explained
    4) the "replacement" commandments are stellar ideals to live by and he quoted others and gave inspirational examples of other humans

What I do not like is the religious "bashing". It is a very difficult thing to be able to address your own blind spot and I am sure he tried to do it. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, this is not a book that I could give a religious person and expect that they would be receptive to it. It saddens me because this book could have been more. It could have been book that opened people's minds to a slightly different way of thinking.

At the end of the day though, well done for what it is--a recipe book for living a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
  • I want to preface my comments by saying I really was drawn to concept of the book, because I've also had thoughts about how the biblical 10 commandments do leave so many things unsaid ... like the omission of actions that we would consider to be highly immoral, such as infanticide, incest, or sexual abuse ... not mentioned ... so it made me wonder "what would be a good set of standards by which we should live?" Mr Miller does that here, and presents some very useful posits from which one could live a meaningful life. I like that about this book. The suggestions he forwards are nearly universal, and I would agree that the world would be a better place if most people would adopt these principles into their own lives. They are

BE THE BEST VERSION OF THYSELF
    DISCOVER SERENITY
    LOVE SELFLESSLY
    PRACTICE POSITIVE RECIPROCITY
    FIND PERSPECTIVE
    BE GRATEFUL
    CULTIVATE A RATIONAL COMPASSION
    CHOOSE GROWTH
    BALANCE
    KNOW IT’S ALWAYS NOW

This is where the book is powerful.

Here is where the book is not. Taking away from his overall positive message is his overwhelming and seething disdain for people who hold different beliefs ... this seems to be in conflict with some of the ideals of the framework, like loving selflessly and practicing positive reciprocity. Hard to do that when one expresses so much disdain for the "other."

He also has a fairly simplistic understanding of the reason for the biblical ten commandments. He doesn't cast them in their original context and therefore loses a lot of the reasoning behind the intent. For example he seems to minimize coveting, when under the surface, coveting leads to discontent, jealousy, entitlement, anger, and eventually murder. So it's actually a big deal. To ignore the ramifications is not looking deep enough and missing the goal of another postulate, "finding perspective."

I gather that this is the least appealing conversation the Mr Miller would entertain.

The biblical ten are about placing the self in the correct life context; the point is that you are not autonomous, but must position one self in relation to God or creation, nature, your origins (family), your immediate relationships, and society. I don't personally believe they were meant to be comprehensive, but serve as a base from which to build life experiences from the proper understanding of your orientation to God and others. So they, like Mr Miller's ten, are a good starting place.
  • In writing this review, I am finding it difficult to concentrate on commenting on the writing and the way it is presented. I keep getting sidelined into imaginary arguments with the author about his ideas.
Which, if you are a writer of this sort of book, is a good sign. If your readers are caught up in your ideas so much that they miss the little errors that interfere with the reading, then you’ve got powerful ideas. A benefit that this writer needs, because the execution of his philosophy is not as smooth as the ideas that produce it.
So, Let’s Get Content out of the Way First
I had all sorts of fun with Miller’s discussion of the biases that keep humans from making logical decisions conformation bias, the placebo affect, and my favourite, the blind spot bias, where you don’t believe that you have biases at all. Which, I’m afraid, applies to most people. Perhaps even me, but I don’t think so
On the other hand, I find it hard to agree with his argument that ethics can be objective. “I think, however, that ethics can operate just like chemistry or biology.” Given the changing nature of human society and ideas, I’m not sure that an ethical ideal that seems perfectly logical and correct today might not be anathema in a hundred year’s time. Dare I mention Manifest Destiny and the White Man’s Burden?
Another one that bothered me “To a certain extent, we are by nature fundamentally good.” This strikes me as just the flip side of the old coin that mankind is inherently sinful, and hardly belongs in the philosophy of an atheist who finds the absolutes of organized religion the source of many of our society’s problems.
But in the long run, I have to agree that these new commandments are far more appropriate to our society than the original edition, so in that respect, Miller has achieved his objective.
    Presentation
As with most of this type of literature, this book contains a lot of great quotes. Miller states that he doesn’t take credit for the great thoughts, just the act of compiling them. So he borrows freely from Buddha, Aristotle, Thoreau, Einstein, and Yogi Berra for his ideas. He doesn’t pretend to be creating a new ethos. He just draws our attention to ideas that have stood the test of time.
Most of the arguments are presented in conversational language that is easy to follow, with regular dips into more complex philosophical style, lightened by a few small dashes of humour. I greatly enjoyed the latter, and would prefer the more elaborate concepts cleaned up and straightened out a bit.
One suggestion for improvement would be the addition of at least two more layers of headings. In Nonfiction writing of this sort, creating headings and subheadings is a useful technique to keep readers in touch with the logic. Also a great way to keep the writer from wandering.
A last minor point, but still germane if you are discussing ideas, where the simple insertion of a comma can completely alter the meaning of a sentence, it is even more important not to disturb the flow of the reader’s involvement with poor sentence structure and the misuse of words. This book could use one more pass through by an editor who understands that grammar was created to enhance meaning.
    To Sum Up
One of the most useful and enjoyable parts of reading a book like this is not what the text tells you, but where it sends your mind wandering when you lose track of what the author is saying.
As with all books in this genre, there is one criteria for deciding whether to recommend it or not; is it worth the time it takes to read it? In my case, the answer is yes. It wasn’t so much that I’m going to take Miller’s advice verbatim. It’s the thought processes and the introspection that those ideas sparked in my own head and my own life that were most worthwhile.
  • This book was very well-written, and had some interesting philosophies on life and religion. Miller writes his own version of the ten commandments, and they are quite a unique perspective. This book is thought-provoking and would be a great implementation or guide on how to live life the right way. The commandments are more like ethical principles for life. It's a way of looking at "thyself" and self-discovery. The words paint a grand picture and whether or not the reader is religious, it gives a new thought for self-wisdom.

  • In “Migraine relief with hypnosis,” Kathie Hardy provides hope to those experiencing migraines, along with a path to overcome them with hypnosis. Kathie weaves her own journey with migraines along with a detailed explanation of how hypnosis can help- both through her own story as well as through an excellent explanation of hypnotic techniques that have been proven to help many others through migraines as well as other issues.
  • Now I understand how hypnosis can help with headache pain. The author has a clear and informative writing style, and uses interesting stories to illustrate her points. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from migraine headaches. Very helpful.
  • This book is NOT just for those suffering from Migraine's. Kathie has presented materials that can be used for many issues in our lives but surely does give a great foundation and actions to be taken in an effort to release the discomfort and pains associated with Migraine's.
Being a once migraine suffer myself, Kathie has presented very informative facts and materials that will truly help with migraine relief. I personally received relief from the 7th Path(tm) process and can attest that the suggestions of the author are factual and helpful.

  • Kathie is an amazing hypnotist, not only because she is compassionate and kind, but because she has a lifetime of experience to draw from. Her time being a registered nurse helped her see what was and was not possible in the field she worked in for so many years.
She is dedicated to being current on all that hypnosis has to offer the modern day practitioner and she spends a lot of time keeping her education and knowledge up to date. As her book states she suffered for years from debilitating migraine headaches and she tried everything she could to alleviate her problem. This book will change your life, it will make a difference in ways you never imagined. Kathie explains hypnosis and how it can help you in a way that is very easy to understand and easy to accept. • I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I marvel at the powerful way Katherine Hardy distilled her rich life experiences and wisdom into this treasure toolbox for people who want to gain awareness and insight into their lives and experience more freedom. The tone of the book has a very gentle and affirming aspect - Katherine establishes rapport quickly with the reader by explaining what's in store and sharing her personal experiences to put the reader at ease and help them feel not quite so alone in their suffering. I was so impressed by the holistic, flowing quality of the book in which Katherine skillfully leads the reader into the heart of the hypnosis experience, inviting them to look inside for answers, introducing important topics in easy-to-understand language, and providing useful resources and techniques to help the reader feel empowered and achieve success. Katherine focuses on self-compassion, the vital role of forgiveness, and the importance of practicing the recommended techniques all provide the reader with a very effective program for achieving relief from migraine headaches and for making other key positive life changes in the process. Ladies Who Punch The Explosive Inside Story of "The View" Audible Audio Edition Ramin Setoodeh Macmillan Audio Books Reviews

  • Explosive and entertaining, this book is everything you expect it to be and more. It is a thoroughly entertaining, well researched and meticulously detailed behind the scenes account of the long running daytime talk show that has ran on ABC since 1997. Author Ramin Setoodeh painstakingly interviewed most of the co-hosts from "The View" and many of it's producers and many other people involved with the production of the series. He did a breathtaking amount of research and spares no detail in documenting every aspect of this show.

And nobody is spared in this bias free accounting of a broadcasting institution. when I say nobody is spared, I mean that. Each co-host is profiled in a section (or sections) of the book and they are portrayed warts and all. He doesn't play favorites and everybody's good and bad sides are discussed. Barbara is portrayed as a multi-faceted woman who was at times maternal and at times viscous towards her co-hosts. She is shown as an aging newscaster and producer desperate to secure her reputation and not ruin her legacy; as a producer who will protect her show at all costs---and who at times is shockingly out of touch with the world; and at times coldly void of emotion toward her co-workers.

The book starts with a short biographical accounting of Barbara's early life, her career struggles and rise to fame. It then veers into Barbara conceiving the idea for "The View" and it's development; selection of the original co-hosts and it's rocky formative years. It breezes through Debbie Matenopoulos being fired from the show and Star's descent into madness and her eventual exit from the show; it discusses Star's historic on-air ambush of Barbara by announcing her departure ahead of schedule in a coordinated attack that included a scathing interview with PEOPLE magazine bashing Barbara and the show.

It portrays Joy as a back-stabbing, trouble making jerk out to get her fellow hosts, especially Elisabeth. It portrays Rosie as a insensitive, power-hungry nut-ball; it portrays Elisabeth as a calculating, uninformed primadonna and Whoopi as a self-absorbed, self-important egomaniac. But shockingly, it also discusses Barbara's off-air personality which ranged from maternal to self-concerned. It dishes on Barbara's conflict between protecting her own legacy and her show at all costs-even at the expense of people she hired and eventually fired.

This book is not for the faint of heart; it really spills all the dirt. This is an unflinching, don't read while drinking or you'll spit it out shocker, it is stock full of stunning, juicy, gossipy dirt. But it's much more than that. It is well-researched, evenly balanced and in my opinion very fair to everybody involved. I get the sense that this is the first time many of these stories are being told, and that for some interview subjects (Debbie, Rosie, Jenny) it was cathartic to finally tell their truth about "The View."

This is a fantastic book, I can't put it down and I've recommended it to all my friends, who are similarly engrossed in this book. It is a well written account and endlessly entertaining.
  • I have watched the View off and on since its initial episode. I used to naively believe the cohosts when they said they got along when off the air. This was a riveting look behind the curtain. I could not put it down.
  • Rich women taking themselves and their lives far far too seriously as they contribute to the decline of American discourse.
  • The first half was interesting and fun to read. The last half was a chore. I don't need to know every executive's name, every producer's name, director's name, etc. I did laugh for a while towards the end when the author writes about The View's 2016 election night coverage, and how the staff had a party set up to celebrate Hillary's win. Hilarious!!! And as we all know, there is really only ONE view being allowed. So thanks for another unintentional confirmation about bias.
  • This was a pretty juicy read, chronicling the ladies who have appeared on this show for 20 years with a spotlight on the 3 divas Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell.

These 3 super egos do not come out looking very good. It appears they were all about backstabbing, sabotaging, and trying to shove one another aside in a quest to be "top dog".

Star comes across as contrite while Jenny McCarthy admits to be in over her head with these women. What it does prove is that if you want something bad enough some people will go to any length to obtain it. Barbara, Whoppi, and Rosie all did.

    As I said, juicy reading!
  • .......

Always enjoyed Barbara Walters as she was the best when in her prime. Remember watching her on the news and especially loved her specials after the
    Oscars.
  • If you are a fan of The View, this book is an absolute must. I only received it in the mail hours ago, and am already turning the pages at breakneck speed. Setoodeh is respectful of these women and the institution that Walters built, yet still makes each chapter so dishy and filled with intimate and explosive behind-the-scenes moments that you’ve always wondered about.
  • After all the anticipation this book comes across as more of a biography about Barbara Walters than a backstage look at what happened at The View. The Omega Principle Seafood and the Quest for a Long Life and a Healthier Planet Paul Greenberg 9780143111115 Books Reviews

  • The Audio version of The Omega Principle, is charmingly read by author Paul Greenberg. His compassionate voice enriched my understanding of this complex story of Ocean Health, Climate Change, Food Systems and our own engagement or not in our health and the health of our planet. At times I laughed out loud and at others I cried. I think I felt how the author felt. Do we feel our efforts at changing our bad habits are futile or important and worthwhile? The main take away is that our lives depend on changing how we produce and acquire food and that our own health and the health of our planet cannot be broken down in segments or isolated incidents or maladies. Our bodies and our planet have to be treated holistically. Everything and everyone is connected. We are all in the same boat. Listening to his voice drew me closer to the story and made me feel as though Mr. Greenberg brought me along on his journey around the world as he chased down and made clear a previously unimaginable story of Omega 3s and 6s. We can't let commodity crops determine how we eat, we have to decide for ourselves what is healthiest for us and that will lead to what is best for the planet. I am so glad I listened to this story. I love it!
  • The Omega Principle is a brilliant and engaging book that works on many levels as a rousing environmental manifesto, a moving midlife memoir, and a gripping historical narrative about the shifting tides of geopolitical power.

Greenberg writes fluidly about how we are going to hell in a handbasket - overfishing our oceans and exhausting ourselves - and hoping that we can magically reverse years of unhealthy habits with a daily golden capsule of fish oil, that, by the way, is produced by destroying the bedrock species of little fish upon which our larger ocean ecosystems depend.

His writing is full of fascinating asides and, although this is a meticulously researched non-fiction book, it reads like a great novel. Some of the most interesting characters 18th century explorer Alexander von Humboldt, the last doomed Incan emperor Atahualpa, rich guy turned ocean activist dubbed Jet Ski Brian, and, of course, Greenberg himself. In the closing lines, Greenberg says poetically of the people he's encountered while writing The Omega Principle "Even in the face of cataclysm, their central mission was to realize completely lived lives." A good reminder to us all.

READ THIS BOOK! If typical summer reading recs get you down - too flimsy or frothy - this is the book for you. A funny and fascinating page-turner that equips you with information to lead a healthier and happier life and engage more deeply with the world around you.
  • This is a great book that is supported through research. The author does an incredible job keeping the reader engaged while explaining complex principles. Must read for those interested in fishery conservation or sustainable food.
  • For someone whose usual pick in a bookshop is fiction, particularly sci-fi and YA, this may seem an unusual choice for a binge-read and a five-star rating. But let me tell you - this is no usual book. Paul Greenberg takes on the molecule at the centre of a multi billion-dollar industry and scientific debate - omega-3, and explains why we're talking about it, what is its actual medical value and how these conversations came about. Needless to say, the subject is associated most with the supplement industry (and hence often tainted by commercial advertising in our minds), or analyses aimed at debunking the aforementioned supplements. And yet this book intricately sidesteps the expected bias and dry scientific literature to get to the heart of the matter.

As always, this isn't just a plain pro/con argument about a single molecule - this gets personal. The book is full of fascinating anecdotes, personal stories and incredible interviewees all aiming to provide a glimpse at every possible side of this argument. The author highlights the omega molecule as something so much bigger than simply a health supplement - it gives the history of its discovery, its journey into commercialism, the science behind the medical benefits (or lack thereof, depending on the source!) and so much more. And he doesn't just leave you hanging - he signposts the future discussions likely to take place - scientific or otherwise, so once you finish reading, you can keep learning.

This book is important. It's brilliant. But most of all - it's damn enjoyable to read. So do yourself a favour and get a copy for your summer reading.

2019 Rand McNally EasyFinder® Midsize Road Atlas Rand McNally 9780528019654 Books Reviews

  • I've been using a Rand McNally road atlas for many years. I thought I would try this EasyFinder version since my eyesight isn't what it used to be. I was very disappointed in it. The maps are indeed much easier to read. However, the amount of detail that has been lost is just unacceptable to me. My own town has disappeared from maps! I like being able to see small towns and roads other than just the major ones. This atlas reminds me of the maps you get online when searching for a location. You have to get closer and closer to get any real detail. However, that isn't possible with a printed map. If you only want the major roads and larger cities, and you intend to get individual maps for each state you visit, then I guess this would be fine for you. Personally, I would prefer having to use my little magnifying glass if necessary, in order to have the detail available. I intend to purchase the larger size atlas that isn't a large-print version, just as I have in the past. I think I'll be much happier with that.
  • I pre ordered the 2019 McNally Road Atlas.
It arrived the day after release.
We usually keep a Atlas in my Truck and car but mainly use GPS to map the Drive or find a location.
We rarely use them, just have them for a backup.
This is the first spiral bound Atlas I have ever purchased.
States are broken in half and leaves a huge gap between the separation.
I don't care for it at all and would not buy another one.
  • Like the size for car travel. It offers states alphabetically unless they are small, then you must use the table of contents to find them. Includes provinces and major cities. Several states require 2 spreads or so, which is nice, as they tried to maintain the same scale for all maps. Details include national parks, sites, monuments, state parks, camping, etc. We used Google maps to supplement the atlas. The centerlines are sometimes carelessly placed, so some details are lost. We used it on a 3 week trip through 26 states and a province with good success. One nice feature if you are looking for an adjoining map, a yellow box identifies which page to turn to in each direction. The spiral binding is getting a bit worn, but we used it a great deal.
Would have liked more small towns indicated.
  • This road atlas was exactly what I expected. It’s small enough to fit in the backpack I keep in my trunk, along with my other emergency supplies, and has enough detail for my needs. It’s about the size of a piece of printer paper and maybe a half an inch thick.

I have attached three photos to show you how this atlas is formatted. In the first photo you can see the list of cities and states that are shown in this atlas. The second photo shows one of the four pages of California. The third photo shows the City of San Diego.

The state maps are going to show a general overview of the highways that connect throughout them. The major city maps then show a closer look at the main roads.

I’ve been reading the other reviews and I have to say... It’s unreasonable to think that a road atlas of the entire United States (this size) would show incredible detail. Be realistic with your expectations. If you need an atlas with a lot of detail I would recommend getting the larger version of the Rand McNally road atlas (which I also own). The larger road atlas I keep in the car but does not fit in my backpack. I got this smaller atlas in case I need a map when I am on foot.
  • Major roads only. Few if any secondary roads. Same goes for city maps. Detroit -yes, Battle Creek - no. I bought two, one for myself and one for a friend. I thought the "size" and spiral binding would make it the perfect map for a car, you know, easy to access and read. It is, if you only want to travel the main roads and super highways. DEFINITELY NOT for anyone who wants to meander down the back roads and truly see America.
  • A little too small print for me and the spiral was directly in the middle of the cities I drive through most often. I ordered the large scale version instead.
  • Bought this to replace a 2010 loarge-sized Rand McNally Atlas. We just completed 3200 miles across country in a rented truck and had to rely on call-phone navigation programs. The Interstate segments that connect in cities are unlabeled. Distance indications are limited. Some Interstate exits are labeled, many are not. The spiral binding is nice but the pages were cut so that it is hard to follow across the edges. Nice looking, good to see relations and the paths of major highways but you will need more to actually drive the routes.
  • Love the large format but pages are mixed up. Some are doubled, others are missing. Everything before of 80 and after 97 is correct but in between, some states are left out (KANSAS, KENTUCKY, LOUISIANA, MAINE , Western MARYLAND)

The Hopeful One Jeanette Billionaire Bride Pact Romance Book 6 edition by Jeanette Lewis Lucy McConnell Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • This book is not like so many of the fluffy sweet romance books so readily available but it has substance and tells the love story of Nikki and Darrin whose honeymoon period seemed to last a long time until they faced a great loss. The title of the book, The Hopeful One, is quite appropriate for even though the pain that is experienced by the characters in the book seems very raw, their love for one another holds and there is a thread of hope beneath all of their hurt. I am a fan of this author and have enjoyed many of her other books but this one was a cut above. Highly recommend!
  • Short story of a couple who have been married three years and suffer everyone tragedy. In the aftermath, he is struggling to keep his company afloat and she is drowning in a sea of depression. They both shut each other out in their grief and problems. In the end they find out the secret to a good marriage is loving unconditionally. At first I thought oh no, he's younger turn to another woman but he doesn't. His business partner sounds like a total moron and no wonder the company was hurting. He was an idiot. The Mother in Law was a little too pretentious and treated the hero with disdain. The rest of the characters were in and out fast but I would like to read about them. I thought the premise of the series was a little shallow and odd so I definitely need to go back and read prior books so I can understand it better. Safe and in KU. New author for me and I will re-read her again. This book only took me 30 or 40 minutes to read so it is pretty short. Still an enjoyable read.
  • I LOVED this book! The Hopeful One takes a look at AFTER the wooing and the wedding. We get to see love in action AFTER the Honeymoon. Love is a choice, as Nikki and Darrin discover. This is a beautifully written story about struggling through heartbreak and finding the joy of the For Better or Worse. You get to see what it means, ‘Forsaking all others’. I’m not going to give any spoilers, just a heads up to have tissues handy! I’m not kidding-it was SO beautiful watching Nikki and Darrin show their love for each other at the end. (NOT a spoiler ;-) you KNEW there would be a HEA!) This is a book with Soul, be prepared to walk away wanting to be a better version of yourself. I hope that I can be a wise, loving, and encouraging friend like Taylor is to Nikki.

*I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
  • I received a complimentary copy of the Hopeful One. But am freely leaving a review.

Wow a great story. Nikki and Darrin are living the life. But then things fall apart. Their communication wasn't good and they both were struggling with the grief of loss. Darrin didn't talk about his feelings as he tried to keep her together and his floundering business. She felt shut out. So she goes to friends for a few days to only realize that she had not been there for Darrin. Darrin starts to go to where Nikki was to realize that she was already in his office. A great story. So often in the grief, marriages fall apart. But was great to see that they worked it out and their marriage was stronger than ever. Life is not a fairy tale with happily ever after endings. It takes work to make a marriage great and then marriage is a beautiful thing.
  • This story is the real thing. Nikki and Darrin are living the dream, but when she has a miscarriage and his business is floundering their happily ever after becomes not so happy. What they lack is communication, he is afraid to tell her about the business she is depressed about her miscarriage. It takes a couple of days apart, and her good friends to open their eyes that love can be hard and it is an action. That bad times should bring you closer and to not be afraid to share your feelings. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
  • The thing I liked best is the believable characters and unfairytale situation they are in. It is refreshing to read a story that isn't all "happily ever after." Even as an unmarried reader with nothing in common with Nikki, I was able to understand and identify with her tragedy and recovery. There could be some triggers in this book for women who have suffered trauma. A few times I had to put the book down and gather my thoughts before I could go on. I was given an advance copy of this book for review.
  • Nikki and Darrin suffer the same loss but respond in different ways. My husband and I went through the same experience many years ago and early in our marriage. This one was sad for me because it brought up the heartache but it also made me see how truly different men and women handle this. The author did a great job of making me feel their emotions and struggles. Nikki has great friends who pointed back to Darrin and her love for him. Sometimes talking and truly experiencing how we truly feel is difficult even with our spouse. Loved the ending. Another great one in this series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
  • I've been waiting for this story for a while and it did not disappoint. I loved that it was different than the other books in the series as it's mostly about their life after marriage. What a great title, we can all use a little hope in our lives. This story is about true love, but it also addresses real life issues and I loved that. Sometimes reading is an escape, other times it is nice to read about real issues.

Tozer on the Holy Spirit A 365Day Devotional edition by A W Tozer Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • If you're looking for touchy-feely Christianity, this ain't it. Tozer was Old School and his arguments for being so are as compelling today as they were when he wrote them decades ago...for good reason God doesn't change. In a nutshell, Tozer believes that we are creations, made for the specific purpose of doing the Creator's will, which can be less of a struggle when we rely on the Holy Spirit. Tozer was prescient, too. He foresaw 50 years ago the Feel Good theologies that have infected our churches. If you want to start each day with a couple minutes of hard truth then try this book. Ig you want to be told that God is Santa Claus and you're on the Nice List, I don't think you'll like this book.
  • This is one of the best writers of the century. If you like your ears tickled, don't read him. If you want the truth, get his books!
  • Do not expect to bore through this material. You have to read it in small sections and then think through the script to understand the messages.
  • Because I read it and found it to be scriptural sound I gave this book five stars. It does have some typos, but. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a short, interesting, challenging daily Bible study.
  • What can I say? One can never go wrong with quite a few now-home men of God Billy Graham, Charles Spurgeon, J Vernon McGee, and Aiden Wilson Tozer (among many others.)
  • I have found these daily devotions to be uncannily well timed, each day offering guidance so specific to my need that I often thought God Himself had arranged for my readings.
  • This book gives you the meat of Tozer's writings about the Holy Spirit. Excellent devotional. I read it straight through from "cover to cover" first. ( version)
  • Great Devotional onThe Holy Spirit by Brother Tozer!!
